A Belgian Abbey Style Tripel brewed by one of only seven breweries in the world officially entitled to call themselves an “Authentic Trappiste Breweries”. This Trappiste beer has undergone secondary fermentation in the bottle, in the cellars of the Abbaye of Westmalle under the direction of the monks who utilize only natural ingredients of water, barley, malt, yeast, and crystallized sugar. The monks at Westmalle brew 3 highly rated beers, the famous Tripel and Dubbel, and the relatively unknown, even inside Belgium, Extra.
Westmalle Tripel is a beautiful beer made with pale candy sugar. It has an alcohol content of 7 percent by weight and 9 by volume according to a bartender. The Tripel definitely produces a warming of the stomach and a glow to the head. It has a very pale color produced from a mash of light pilsener malts. Styrian Goldings hops are used along with some German varieties and the classic Saaz pilsener hop. After a long secondary fermentation, the Tripel is bottled with a dose of sugar and yeast. It is a memorable drink with hints of fruit and pepper. This beer holds up well in the bottle over time and seems to soften with age.
Tasting Notes:
Pours a hazy honey gold colour with a light beige huge lasting head and produces some great lace. Aroma included faint hay fields, some citrus, faint spice, woody hops, malt and candy, yeast and more fruit as it warmed up. Flavour overall still not quite as complex as the Dubbel. Start is faint sweet with full hoppy bitter, medium body and lovely dry clean finish. As to be expected, the alcohol content is more pronounced than the Dubbel but it's still a great beer.
