Gulden Draak Dragon d or

Style: Belgian Dark Ale, Belgian Strong Dark Ale
Alcohol: 10.5% ABV
Brewery: Van Steenberge
Country/Region: Belgium

Product Description:

The Brewery Van Steenberge is located in the Belgian town of Ertvelde, near the city of Gent, and is more than 200 years old. These days, its brewers produces some ten different beers, with about 70 per cent of production focussed on top fermented beers; of which the Gulden Draak is an excellent example. The Draak's high alcohol content (10.5%) has led to it sometimes being refered to as a Abbey Quadruple or Barley Wine, but, even with such highy alcohol content, this ear-warming beer retains a very high level of complexity and richness in both flavours and palate. The resulting dark beer has a creamy, velvety-smooth body and rich, festive dried-fruit, coffee and bitter chocolate flavours. Pefect with after-dinner coffee or as an accompaniment to birthday, Xmas, New Year, or just about any celebration.

Gulden Draak (or 'Golden Dragon') takes its name from a gold sculpture that has a history as rich and colourful as the beer itself. The piece, which is featured on the bottle, originated in Scandinavia and was lugged around Europe during the crusades, stopping in Constantinople for a time before finding its way to Gent, in Belgium, where it now sits atop the clock tower in the town square. It's a tale, and an ale, well worth tracking down.

Tasting Notes:

Pours a rich, hazy, dark red-brown colour with a huge, chunky, long-lasting beige head. The aroma is fresh and fruity, with a sugar-cane syrup maltiness and a hint of alcohol. It's medium-to-full-bodied, with a strong but well-balanced bitter-sweet palate. The beer's high alcohol content is well masked by plenty of festive fruit, coffee and chocolate flavours, so, if you like Noel beers, you will really like this one.
